The Infrastructure Behind India's Food Supply Chain

A third of India’s food never reaches its table. A significant share of food produced in India is lost before it reaches consumers. Fragmented aggregation, inconsistent quality standards, delayed payments, and inefficient logistics all contribute to food loss, unpredictable farmer incomes, and unnecessary emissions. Globally, nearly a third of all food produced is lost or wasted each year, and in India, improving transparency and coordination across the supply chain remains one of the clearest ways to cut those losses.

Digital workflows connecting farm to buyer. FarMart was founded in 2015 by childhood friends Alekh Sanghera and Mehtab Singh Hans, alongside Lokesh Singh, to address the fragmented USD 300 billion food supply market in India. The Gurugram-based company, backed by investors including Matrix Partners India, General Catalyst, and Omidyar Network India, runs an AI-enabled sourcing and commerce platform that connects food businesses, processors, suppliers, logistics providers, and farmers through digital workflows, traceability, and real-time coordination. It is supported by a network of Village Level Entrepreneurs, who serve as the last-mile link between farmers and the marketplace, while AI-powered workflows automate supplier verification, KYC onboarding, and compliance documentation, cutting onboarding time significantly.

Payments in hours, not weeks. Integrated payment infrastructure settles suppliers within 1 to 4 hours of transaction completion, and real-time risk detection flags potential supply chain disruptions before they reach buyers. Today, companies such as Britannia, Adani Group, Godrej, Parle, Patanjali, AWL Agri, Roquette, and Suguna Foods source through the platform, reflecting FarMart’s growing role as a trusted digital marketplace for agricultural trade.
